EPC Design Largest & Most Complex DC Substation in UK PDF Print E-mail

4kA 750V DC Contactors Installed At Ludgate Cellars DC Substation
Controlled by a Siemens PLC Interfaced to the Signalling System.

EPC Services has successfully completed the detailed design for the largest and most complex DC substation in the UK. The substation was put into service in November 2009 to provide the interface between a dual electrified and DC railway in London. The substation has 20MW of installed capacity (from eight 2.5MW rectifiers) at 750V and incorporates PLC signalling system controlled contactor switching to control DC stray currents.

The installation was undertaken by our partner EDF Energy in under 9 months and combined with extensive and complex changes to the high voltage feeders and electric track equipment as a result of the Thameslink reconstruction of Blackfriars Station amounts to a contract in excess of £20 million.
